TUT closes doors for spring recess

In a statement the university said management, in consultation with the SRC, resolved to start the recess period earlier, with effect from 27 September 2016. 

"The decision is applicable to all campuses, except Soshanguve North and South, Polokwane and Mbombela, and was taken to minimise disruption of academic activities and possible damage to property," the statement read.

Students blockaded entrance to TUT's Pretoria West campus yesterday. The university announced that the fourth term will resume on Monday, 10 October 2016.

"This decision was taken due to the escalating disruptions in the higher education sector as part of the national drive for fee free education," it said.

Staff, however, will report for duty tomorrow as tests scheduled to be written from 27 to 30 September 2016, will continue as scheduled..

Tests that should have been written on the 23rd, 24th and 26th of September 2016, were postponed until after the recess.

"Although the University recognises students' right to protest, it also has a responsibility to ensure that no student is disadvantaged in the process," the institution said.

Meanwhile, the Durban University of Technology has suspended lectures, practicals and assessments for today and tomorrow following student protests on several campuses yesterday.
