Tshwane without mayor again as Makwarela resigns
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Congress of the People in Tshwane has confirmed the resignation of its councillor Murunwa Makwarela.

Makwarela ended his brief stint as the city's first citizen on Friday, tendering his resignation hours after the Chief Registrar of the High Court in Pretoria confirmed that she did not issue his insolvency clearance certificate.
Makwarela, who is a member of Cope, was disqualified as a PR councillor earlier this week due to his financial troubles.
He later handed the certificate to the city manager and was subsequently reinstated as mayor.
But on Friday, the registrar said the certificate was fake and that the matter has been referred to the Hawks.
Cope's Terrance Monama says they are giving Makwarela space to deal with the issue.
"Cope in Tshwane region has duly accepted the resignation of Dr Murunwa Makwarela. As a region, we believe that these matters are sub judice and would not want to comment on it at this stage.

"We have resolved to give Dr Makwarela the space required to deal with these personal matters and legal matters and to afford him his constitutional right of being innocent until proven otherwise."
Monama says they will also remove Makwarela as a PR councillor.
"We have resolved to withdraw him as a Cope public representative with immediate effect from the IEC and the council. The due processes will be followed for the removal and a suitable candidate to take over as the councillor will be announced in due course."
In the resignation letter seen by Jacaranda FM, Makwarela said he had instructed his lawyers to deal with the matter.
"To protect the image of the office I occupy and the good name of the city, I have decided to remove myself from the position of mayorship in the City of Tshwane.
"This is in no form or the other an admission of guilt on the prevailing public allegations but a desire to let the city focus on service delivery and other critical business."
