Truckers urged to obey road rules as N2 Pongola reopens
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Sipho Hlomuka has again called truck drivers and truck owners to ensure that there is no further loss of life on the roads.
He has urged them to adhere to the rules of the road.
He was speaking after the community of Pongola agreed for the N2 in the area to be reopened to side tipper trucks.
It comes two months after an accident involving a truck and a bakkie claimed the lives of 21 people, including 19 children.
KZN Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane says they will continue to work with that community to improve safety.
"The decision by the community is important for the reopening of the economy in that area because majority of these side tripper trucks are transporting coal and linking the province of KwaZulu-Natal and other areas, but it is also a strategic route to the Richards Bay Port.”
"As government we firmly believe that the trucking industry has got an important role to play in making sure that we reduce the levels of accidents on the road. We will play our part as government, by making sure that we deploy police and resources."
