The 47-year-old was shot while he was driving to work in Richards Bay.

According to the police, Swart had been ambushed by three men on foot in Meerensee on Monday.

The company's spokesperson Bheki Nowele says Swart will be remembered for his steadfast leadership.

"He was very critical to the senior team and very committed and passionate about his work and someone who had integrity and very straightforward. As the Rio Tinto family and RBM we will miss him a lot."

Now, the motive for the killing isn't yet unknown.

The provincial government's calling on the police to move swiftly to track down the gunmen.

Premier Sihle Zikalala said in a statement: "That the incident took place in broad daylight, during rush hour and in full view of pedestrians and motorists, indicates the callous nature of the attackers. At the same time, we hope that this provides a window that will help in the identification and arrest of the perpetrators.

“We call on the police to make this a priority investigation and to get to the bottom of this criminal act. Only swift arrest will send a clear message that we will not allow violence to be used to resolve our differences, no matter what they are, or how big or intractable the problems might be
