Tributes Pour In for Skipper Hailed as 'Greatest Man Ever'

The family of a well-known skipper who passed away after a boat accident on a south coast beach says his death has left them shaken and heartbroken.

Goolam Essack and three other fishermen were on a vessel catching sardines at Umgababa beach on Monday morning.

His son Faizel says he had just a run a net about 20 metres from the shore when the vessel was hit by a wave and capsized.
"As the waves caved the engine switched off, there was nothing else he could do; he couldn't avoid it. Somehow, he managed to get outside of the water but as he came out of the water he had a heart attack and collapsed.”
He says his father is known in the community as the legend of the ocean.
"To be honest he was the greatest man that I have ever knew. I would take him for a dad anytime.”
