Tributes pour in following the passing of ANC KZN's Ricardo Mthembu

Messages of condolences are streaming in following the passing away of KZN ANC spokesperson, Ricardo Mthembu.

The former KwaDukuza mayor died from COVID-19 complications earlier today. 


Newswatch understands Mthembu was admitted to a north coast hospital several days ago.


He's said to have lost his battle while in ICU.


The DA's KZN leader, Zwakele Mncwango has sent condolences to his family and says Mthembu was man who understood democracy.


"He was one of the selfless leaders we had in the province, all we can say now is rest in peace."

Mthembu was a Member of the Provincial Legislature.


The IFP says it's shocked and saddened by his passing. 


Party leader, Velenkosini Hlabisa has described him as a sociable and friendly character - who was progressive through his contributions in the Legislature.


Nomusa Phungula from the Office of the Speaker says the Legislature has been hit hard as Mthembu had nearly a decade's experience in local government.


"He came and joined us at the beginning of the sixth term. We had high hopes that we will continue with him in the work of oversight, but it was not to be."


Mthembu had been serving as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
