President Cyril Ramaphosa broke the news of his passing during an online discussion with editors' forum, SANEF, last night.

Ramaphosa said Bizos' health deteriorated in recent weeks but that the family of the distinguished lawyer assured him he was comfortable in his final hours.

Bizos' family says he died of natural causes and peacefully at home, in the afternoon.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation says Bizos - a giant of South African history and of global struggles for justice - was a friend and trusted adviser to the organisation.

Over his long legal career, Bizos represented prominent political activists including - Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela in both the Treason and Rivonia Trials.

In recent years, he was one of the lawyers that represented the affected families during the Marikana inquiry.
