Trial continues for accused in KZN witchcraft case

The trial of a fourth double murder accused continues after three of his co-accused were given life sentences by a KZN court.

Last week, the Greytown Regional Court jailed Philisiwe Zuma, Thubelihle Shezi and Mazwi Lembethe for killing a Matimatolo woman and her 28-year-old daughter.

 

Last August, police found the women's bodies inside a house that had been burnt down.

 

The victims had been accused of witchcraft.

"According to information, the deceased were attacked while they were both in their homestead together with their six grandchildren. They were accused of witchcraft in the area. The children were taken out of the house, leaving the mother and a daughter inside the burning house," says police spokesperson Siyabonga Nkwanyana.

 

"Detectives conducted the investigation and ensured that the docket was trial-ready. On Wednesday, 26 June 2024, three of the four accused were found guilty and sentenced to Count 1: Arson, five years direct imprisonment and Count 2: Murder - life sentence."
