Transport Minister Dipuo Peters on Saturday condemned the killing of a bus driver in KwaZulu-Natal.
The incident happened on Friday on the Watson Highway at Tongaat when the driver of a Tongaat Circle Bus Company bus was shot by a passenger.
According to witness reports the driver stopped to let an unidentified passenger get off the bus when the man turned around and shot him at point-blank range.
This caused the bus, carrying about 20 passengers, to lose control and plunge down a small embankment. The suspect fled the scene.
Peters said she would enlist the services of the Road Accident Fund and the Road Traffic Management Corporation to give the family of the dead driver and injured passengers support and comfort.
