Transport dept to focus on formalising taxi industry
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Minister Fikile Mbalula says this year's Transport Month will focus on formalising the taxi industry.

He says they want to have this done by April next year - adding the process will see operators registered with the UIF.
Speaking at the official opening of the Hammardale Interchange, the Transport Minister hinted an amount of R500 billion would be made available to transform the sector.
"To ensure that the taxi industry is formalised and the taxi industry is fully regulated.
"The taxi industry is the biggest carrier in the mode of transport, more than 20 million South Africans and yet it is not subsidised.
"People are saying 'R500 billion down the drain' that's not correct, there is money to subsidise to help industries that are in distress," says Mbalula.
