Transport Department vows to crack down on N3 protests
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
KZN Department of Transport officials have warned of
more arrests as they crack down on the culprits behind the N3
blockades and protests.
A number of trucks were left unattended at Van Reenen's Pass for hours on Thursday morning, leading to major traffic backlogs on the busy route.
They had to be removed because truckers who left them there took the keys with them.
Earlier this week, drivers in the Free State blocked off the N3 over the employment of foreign national drivers.
"These barricades and protests are unwarranted because we opened the doors to engagements with the truck drivers," says Transport's Kwanele Ncalane.

"We have been working with them with a number of issues including joint enforcement operations where we've been attending to lawlessness in the industry.
"We have also engaged with the task team on a number of legislative amendments which are aimed at ensuring that all the issues being raised are attended to and ventilated."
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Fikile Mabalula has called for an end of the blockading of roads and appeals for truck drivers to allow the on-going discussion to take its course.
A follow-up engagement on this matter is scheduled for Sunday.
