Transport Department to further clamp down on drunk drivers
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Department of Transport will be clamping down on drink-driving.
Speaking at the National Road Safety Strategy Engagement and Development Summit in Midrand yesterday Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, said they are working with the Department of Justice to put in place stiffer penalties for those getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
"We believe that if society knows that you are a drunken driver then people will know to avoid you. We need to go hard on these particular aspects," she said.
"We need to introduce the on-the-spot type of testing for alcohol so that we actually get people to understand," Peters said.
During the summit various role-players discussed ways to half fatalities on South Africa's roads.
