Transnet quashes oil dumping claims at Durban beachfront
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Transnet has rubbished claims that a ship dumped oil on the Durban beachfront recently.

In a video taken by a beachgoer a few days ago, the vessel is seen spewing what appeared to be a black substance into the water - as bathers swim along the shore.
Transnet National Ports Authority says that is not what happened.
In a statement, the government corporation says the vessel in question - the Isandlwana Dredger - was actually replenishing sand to prevent heavy erosion.
The Ports Authority says the method known as 'rainbowing' propels clean sand, that has been dredged from a sandpit, back into the northern side of the port.
It has added that this pumping action is also responsible for sustaining Durban's beaches when the city is hit by strong winds and ocean currents shift the movement of sand.
Transnet stresses that it is crucial to maintain the depths of the port and that the 'rainbowing' poses no danger to marine or human life.
