"We have full implementation of fork shifts both at Pier 1 and Pier 2. Pier 2 was supposed to be implemented in January; we have successfully implemented it in December, and that appears to be working well."

The entity's acting CEO, Michelle Phillips, gave the National Logistics Crisis Committee an update on the situation at the ports in Durban and Richards Bay on Tuesday.

She says they've made a breakthrough at Durban Container Terminal Pier 2. Backlogs and congestion have been an issue there for years.

"Pier two, I'm glad to say it is running 24/7 maintenance as we speak."

She indicated the City of Mhlathuze's pleased with the reduction in truck numbers.

"We have indicated to them, that we've tried to be everything to everyone when it comes to Richards Bay. When the rail failed or we started to lose rail capacity, we thought that we could make up these volumes with trucks and, unfortunately, some unintended consequences and you saw that with the traffic congestion in Richards Bay.

"However, a number of things have been done, and you can see how we are reducing the number of trucks over the period."
