Transnet hikes wage offer as strike continues

The country’s ports and freight-rail operator has upped its wage offer to striking workers.
Transnet's offering the United National Transport Union (Untu) and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) members a hike of up to 5.3 % over the next three years.

It includes backdated pay changes to April - which would be made in November and January.
The new offer includes a medical aid allowance increase of 4.5%.
The news comes after two days of wage negotiations at the CCMA after talks deadlocked and workers downed tools countrywide.

Transnet says while they haven't yet settled on the offer, engagements are continuing.
Labour unions have demanded pay hikes in line with cost of living increases, which they say are a lot more than 7%.
