Transnet to embark on major road repair project around Durban port
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Durban port roads will soon get a facelift following an injection of R233 million from the Transnet National Ports Authority.
Transnet says the intensified pressure on the roads posed by an influx of trucks to the port has prompted the investment.
The Port Authority says the rehabilitation of roads will be in the key container handling port precincts, the Container and Maydon Wharf, and the liquid bulk Island View precinct.
Maydon Wharf will have 16 roads repaired first, followed by Island View with three roads and Bayhead with two.
The project also includes additional repairs.
Restoring functional defects such as surface drainage, damaged manholes and inlets caused by heavy vehicles.

In the two years of the project, the traffic authorities will assist with redirecting traffic flow.
It says the Port of Durban is a crucial contributor to the economy, handling about 60% of the country's total container volume.
The volumes handled are moved through the Southern Road Network.
Transnet says that over the years, the influx of trucks entering the port has greatly increased, leading to the deterioration of the road infrastructure.
