Transformation slow in SA: labour official

A senior practitioner at the Labour Department dealing with employment equity says the slow pace of transformation is concerning.

Robert Dzhombere's been speaking during the department's annual employment equity roadshow at Durban's International Convention Centre.

Dzhombere says while there has been significant growth in the number of employers who have submitted their employment equity plans in the last two years, they have found that the information contained in the plans did not meet the requirements.

"This legislation has been around for more than 10 years and when we measure the pace at which transformation is taking place, it's very slow. We want to expedite this process.

"We want to see the people who are coming from designated groups occupying those positions, or maybe given a fair opportunity to prove themselves in the workplace," he said.

In 2013, 15 000 EE plans were submitted to the department. Last year, more than 24 000 plans were received.
