Traffic officer suspended after cellphone theft video

A traffic officer who was filmed stealing a cellphone at a food outlet in Pietermaritzburg has been suspended.

The man in full uniform is seen in CCTV footage reaching for the phone on the counter at the restaurant.
He then puts the phone in his pocket.

KZN Transport Department spokesperson, Kwanele Ncalane says they've met with the outlet's management to verify the video after it made waves on social media.
"We take it very seriously because it affects the image of the institution, but further it also brings into question the morality and the public standing of our law enforcement fraternity".

"There has been a correspondence last week to the traffic officer to say he must give reasons why he must not be suspended, but after an internal investigation we have come to a conclusion to place him on suspension," he said.
