Police say the man was standing outside his vehicle along the M7 highway, south of the city when gunmen opened fire before fleeing in a getaway vehicle.

No arrests have been made.

Paramedics who attended the scene say it was the second shooting at the same spot in three months.

A woman, who's asked not to be named, says she and her tow truck driver husband were friends with the victim.

She says this is their fourth friend to be targeted, while her partner has also been shot at while on the road.

The woman says the industry has become extremely dangerous as people fight over territory.

"There's a lot of pressure involved in this and unfortunately, there are one or two that make it very difficult for the rest of the people out there. It turns into a big violent fight.

"It's just not the same anymore. Towing has just gone very bad. Our lives are being taken innocently for a small amount of money."

She's called for safety to be improved to ensure drivers' lives are protected on the job.
