Tourists escape close encounter with Hluhluwe elephant

With today being World Elephant Day, the manager of EuroZulu in Hluhluwe says an elephant that pierced a hole through the car of a French couple had been in must at the time of the incident yesterday.

The couple had been on safari. The elephant came close to their car before putting its tusk through one of the front doors.

No one was injured.

Eurozulu manager AnneMarie Asher-Wood has described what transpired during the incident.

''It was a bull elephant that came from the front as they describe it and they reversed their car and then stopped.

''The elephant moved off the road and then appeared again on the side and that is where the tusk through the car,'' she said.

Asher-Wood has explained that elephants are naturally curious animals.

Elephant whisperer Francoize Malby Lawrence agrees. She spoke to East Coast Breakfast this morning.

''Many people love and respect the elephants but then the elephants are unique creatures, they are intelligent and they take care of themselves,'' he said.

Zululand Observer posted a photo showing the extent of the damage caused to the tourists vehicle.
