Tough winter ahead for KZN farmers
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
KZN farmers are predicting a bleak winter this year with the country caught in the grips of severe drought.
Agriculture union, KwaNalu is hoping uncharacteristic winter rain will fall, providing some relief during the dryer months.
KwaNalu's Mike Black says major concerns going into winter include water supplies and an increased fire risk.
He says most farmers have been planning in advance.
"At this stage the wet season is coming to an end. We always live in hope - farmers are eternal optimists. We always hope there will be some rainfall during winter although it's fairly abnormal to receive that.
"In many cases, the warning signals have been there and people have already started making plans fairly early," he said.
