Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
It's a historic moment in the country's fight against the covid-19 as the first batch of coronavirus vaccine has arrived in the country.
The long-awaited vaccine just landed on our shores this afternoon from the Serum Institute of India.
The Emirates aircraft has offloaded the vaccine and it will quarantine for 14 days for quality purposes.
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Deputy President David Mabuza, who chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Vaccines, are at the OR Tambo airport receiving South Africa’s first consignment of COVID-19 vaccine.
The 1 million doses of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca jab arriving today in Phase 1 of vaccine rollout strategy will go to South Africa's frontline healthcare workers.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation at 8pm on developments in relation to the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
