Toti cellphone store hit in recent spate of robberies

A cellphone store has been targeted by a group of robbers at Galleria Mall in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban.

Initial reports are that at least eight people broke into the store and fled with cellphone devices.  

The mall's General Manager, Kurt Hoggan has confirmed the incident.  

"We can confirm that an incident has occurred at Galleria and is being currently being investigated by the SAPS. Hopefully, we'll get some clarity at a later stage," he said.

The police's Nqobile Gwala says it's still too early to confirm whether the robbery is linked to other similar incidents in the province.

 Gwala is appealing to the public to come forward with information that could help arrest the culprits. 

"A group of suspects broke into a cellphone store and took a number of cellphones before fleeing the scene in their getaway Mercedes Benz. Charges of armed robbery as well as burglary are being investigated by Amanzimtoti police. At this stage, we cannot establish whether it was a syndicate or not - pending our investigation," she said.
