Police probe Maritzburg mall robbery

KwaZulu-Natal police have opened a case of business burglary and attempted murder after a robbery at the Liberty Midlands Mall in Pietermaritzburg resulted in the death of a suspected robber.
According to police, five thieves broke into an electronics store on Saturday night and stole merchandise.
Officers pursued the getaway vehicle after it was spotted on the N3 heading towards Durban.
Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says there was an exchange of gunfire after the occupants realised cops were on their tail.
"The suspects' vehicle crashed and they fled the scene on foot, shooting towards the members. The members continued shooting towards the suspects and one suspect was shot and killed. A second suspect was shot and bitten by a dog and taken to hospital under police guard. The other three suspects fled," he said.
