The
Tongaat Disaster Relief Centre says the community's still picking up the pieces
after last year's devastating tornado.

Many have witnessed a loved one being crushed by the falling buildings."
Residents held a prayer for peace, at the weekend, to mark the one year
anniversary of the June 3rd disaster.
The tornado wreaked havoc when it slammed into areas in and around Tongaat and
La Mercy.
Seven people lost their lives in Tongaat, and many homes destroyed.
The centre's Harold Maistry says the road to recovery's been incredibly
difficult.
"Many lost their phones and possessions and the rebuilding process is
still underway. Many of these homes have been deemed under insured and as such
are in a constant battle with insurance agencies

He says organizations have continued to lend a helping hand.
"Tongaat Disaster Relief repaired approximately 80 houses, this excludes
building materials provided for the informal settlements.
“The government also provided relief packages for the repairs and restoration
of homes particularly informal settlements.
“Several organizations and business houses have also undertaken the repair and
restoration of damaged houses due to the tornado."
