Top 5 things to expect in 2019

The countdown to 2019 has begun - and we're hoping the new year is exciting, with new goals and only good things ahead. As we bid farewell to 2018 today, here are the five top things to look forward to in 2019.

A Women's World Cup

The Fifa Women's Soccer World Cup will be hosted in France in 2019 - where South Africa's Banyana Banyana has been placed in the Group B fixture. A total of 52 matches will be played and 24 teams will compete for the championship. The tournament kicks off on the 7th of June 2019, where France will face South Korea, in Paris while the final will be held in Lyon, on the 7th of July 2019. 

Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith to perform in SA

British superstars - Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith will be performing to sold-out audiences in March and April respectively. 27-year-old Sheeran, who performed at the Global Citizen Festival at the FNB Stadium earlier this month returns to Johannesburg on the 23rd of March. Smith's Thrill of it All Tour kicks off in Joburg on the 3rd of April.

Another Royal Baby 


The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first child in Spring 2019. The announcement made in October came just five months after their wedding. Wearing Givenchy, Markle was last seen showing off her baby bump at the British Fashion Awards earlier this month.

Disney takes over the cinemas 


Walt Disney Pictures will gross millions at the Box Office this coming year. The Lion King, Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, Dumbo and Aladdin are some of the films expected to be released by the entertainment company. 1994 animated musical film, The Lion King returns in 2019 and boasts a world-renowned cast including South African actor, John Kani.  

More sporting events 

The ICC Cricket World Cup will be hosted by England and Wales, from the 30th of May to 14th of July 2019. South Africa faces England in the tournament's first ODI. While the ninth Rugby World Cup will be held in Japan from the 20th of September to the 2nd of November. South Africa holds two RWC titles - having won the championship in 1995, and 2007.
