The ANC has disqualified its prominent senior member Tony Yengeni from contesting for any NEC positions in the upcoming elective conference.

The party will hold its 55th National Congress next weekend at Nasrec, Johannesburg.

In the letter sent to Yengeni by the ANC Electoral Committee, he is informed that he is disqualified over his fraud conviction following a vetting process.

In 2003, he was found guilty of fraud in a case linked to the corruption investigation into an arms deal.

The ANC 54th elective conference in 2017 resolved to disqualify any member of the ANC charged or convicted with serious crimes in what is also known as step-aside rule.

"The vetting information at our disposal reveals that you have historical record of being found guilty of a serious crime in a court of law for which the prison sentence had been more than six months.

"To be specific you are summarily disqualified as candidate for all NEC positions, including additional members during the conference. We therefore regret to inform you that you have been disqualified from being nominated as a candidate," said chairperson of the Electoral Committee Kgalema Motlanthe.

Meanwhile Political Analyst Piet Croucamp says the Committee led by Motlanthe has helped in the renewal of the ANC.

"The result we see now in the letters sent to Tony Yengeni and Bathabile Dlamini. Of course the question is will it also sanitise the ANC from people mentioned in the Zondo Commission report for instance Malusi Gigaba, where does the ANC draw the line in the sand as far as corruption and gate keeping is concerned, this Committee has done more to renew the ANC than most of the things that President Cyril Ramaphosa has done."

On Friday former ANC Women's league President Bathabile Dlamini said she will challenge her disqualification from the conference.

In April this year Dlamini was given a suspended sentence of four years and a R200,000 fine for perjury.
