Tight security as UKZN reopens
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The University of KwaZulu-Natal says security around its campuses will be beefed up as it re-opens its doors this morning after a brief break that was preceded by violent student protests.
The academic programme was disrupted after students torched university property, including buildings and vehicles on UKZN's Westville and Pietermaritzburg campuses.
Their grievances range from an apparent increase in the registration fee to the alleged abolition of the registration appeals committee.
University spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka says talks with student representatives bodies are ongoing.
"We've improved our excess security systems to make sure that whoever comes to campus should be able to produce some form of identification - a student or a staff card.
"As the university, we shall issue suspensions beginning this week to anyone that has been involved or suspected of being involved in the torching of the building of the university," he said.
Two students face charges of public violence.
