Judges Matter has been commenting as the Judicial Service Commission prepares to start interviewing the four candidates for the top job.

Acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, Gauteng Judge President Dunstan Mlambo and Supreme Court of Appeal President Mandisa Maya, who could become our first woman Chief Justice, will be grilled by JSC commissioners from Tuesday.

"They must have high levels of integrity that must aspire the respect of their colleagues in the judiciary and the commission. Ultimately they must be really good communicators and administrators who are able to speak on behalf of the judiciary.

Former chief justice Mogoeng Mogoeng retired last year.

Judges Matter researcher Mbekezeli Benjamin says it's going to be a tight race.

"One thing in common that they have is that all of them are good judges. They have many years of judicial experience and most of them are leaders in the judiciary but there are certain unique traits about them as well.”

Justice Madlanga will be interviewed first with proceedings kicking off at 10am on Tuesday.

Proceedings are expected to wrap up on Friday.
