On Friday night, an off-duty soldier disarmed a colleague in Ikageng outside Potchefstroom during an argument and ordered him to summon his girlfriend.

The disarmed man then made the phone call and minutes later, the 31-year-old girlfriend arrived in a car with a male friend.

The suspect then allegedly shot and killed the male friend before driving off with the girlfriend and his colleague.

The colleague was later dropped off at an intersection.

Police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh says the girlfriend’s body was later found in the car.

"On Saturday afternoon, the Flying Squad unit received information about the car that was travelling on the Ottosdal/ Hartbeesfontein Road. During the car chase, the suspect pointed the police with his firearm, prompting the members to fire a few shots.

“The driver ultimately pulled off the road but was found with a bullet wound to his head. The body of the 31-year-old woman was found inside the car with head injuries."
