Hawks spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, says the arrests were made after a car was intercepted while entering South Africa through theosi Bay border K in northern Kwazulu-Natal.

He says several bags of heroin were found concealed in a make-shift compartment underneath the vehicle.

"The first suspect was arrested on Monday then we had to investigate further, leading us to two more suspects who are foreign nationals. The two suspects are going to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court today and their case will be transferred to KZN where they will appear together tomorrow," he said.

Netshiunda says the arrests were made by the Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit together with Empangeni Crime Intelligence officers.

He says the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to secure the country's borders against the drug trade.

"This is a major bust for us. We have intensified our security at the borders - at all ports of entry - because we have seen an increase in the amount of drugs coming into the country. So, our intelligence is also on high alert," he said.
