The police watchdog says the officers are said to have gone to question the men, who parked their car next to a voting station in Azalea Township on Monday.
"When the police saw this vehicle, they approached it. Three men got out of the vehicle and started shooting at the police officers. The police retaliated, the three were fatally wounded," says IPID's Grace Langa.
Langa says the vehicle had no number plates.
