The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the deaths of three men who were shot by police officers in Plessislaer.

The police watchdog says the officers are said to have gone to question the men, who parked their car next to a voting station in Azalea Township on Monday.

"When the police saw this vehicle, they approached it. Three men got out of the vehicle and started shooting at the police officers. The police retaliated, the three were fatally wounded," says IPID's Grace Langa.

Langa says the vehicle had no number plates.

"As we continue with our investigation, more information will be brought forward. IPID is investigating a case of death as a result of police action."
