Three men sentenced for raping north coast woman

Three men have begun serving lengthy sentences after being convicted of raping a woman in Esikhaleni, south of Richards Bay on the north coast.

The Esikhaleni Regional Court convicted and sentenced Siyathokoza Masinga (31), Mxolisi Mthembu (23) and Sibusiso Kunene (28) on charges of kidnapping and rape recently.

Masinga was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and eight years for kidnapping.

Mthembu was sentenced to 18-years for rape and eight for kidnapping, while Kunene was sentenced to 25-years for rape.

Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele says the victim and her friend were approached by three men on 6 April, 2012.

The suspects took the victim by force to a flat, while her friend managed to escape and run away.

Mbhele says the woman was raped by all three men.

A case was opened at Esikhaleni SAPS and the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation.

The province's top brass has welcomed the sentence, saying such conduct is unacceptable in our society.
