Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
Three gunmen have been shot and killed in a shootout with police.
Unknown suspects opened fire at a mini bus taxi full of passengers on Friday afternoon in Umzinyathi, north of Durban.
The driver fled the scene and when he returned to the vehicle, he realised that five female passengers were wounded.
Police spokesperson Jay Naicker says upon police arrival the armed men fired towards them.
"The suspects opened fire on police as they fled and there a subsequent exchange of gunfire", he said.
"They eventually lost control of their getaway vehicle which overturned at a ditch. Three hitmen died at the scene as a result of gunshot", Naicker said.
"It is suspected the others fled the scene after the vehicle came to a standstill. Five firearms, including a riffle and shotgun, were recovered by police", he said.
