Cele made the announcement while addressing the media in Soweto on Monday morning.

The arrests come amid the EFF-led national shutdown against the ongoing load shedding crisis, as well as a call for President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down.

Cele said the three councillors were arrested in Gauteng, Free State and Mpumalanga respectively.

“We have arrested 87 people. Now I am told that there are three EFF councillors among those people that have been arrested around the country, but I am still going to verify that,” said Cele.

Meanwhile, community activist Nhlanhla ‘Lux’ Mohlauli took to social media on Monday morning, claiming that his house was petrol bombed.

The incident took place in the early hours of Monday morning in Pimville, Soweto.

Whilst addressing the issue, National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola told the media that commercial explosives were used.

“Police seized some sharp nails that were left over from the commercial explosives we don’t know what type, but mostly commercial explosives are used in the mines, and they are also used quite often in the ATM bombings. We just know that it was a commercial explosive that was used, we haven’t gotten information on the cartridges found. The DPCI and the forensics will investigate and will update us.”
