Thousands of weapons surrendered during amnesty period

Over 2000 weapons have been surrendered to police stations across the country so far-in less than 50 days since an amnesty period began.
That's according to Police Minister Bheki Cele, who says the SAPS has received 298 unwanted firearms and over 2000 rounds of ammunition from a firearm dealer in Johannesburg yesterday.
309 unwanted and unregistered firearms have been surrendered in KZN so far.
Ministerial spokesperson Lirandzu Temba says the law will be tough on those who continue carrying unlicensed guns.

"The Minister has been very clear on this one. He's urging all of South Africans to turn the tide against crime alongside this African police service and take advantage of this amnesty period," she says.
She adds, "he's also warning that the law will be tough on those who persistent carrying guns that are not licensed he's also given assurance that these guns are submitted and surrendered to the various police stations they will be kept in a safe place until they are destructed.
