Classes suspended at Thekwini College
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
Students from TVET Thekwini College have shut down five campuses in Durban over allegations of corruption.
They are accusing principal, Nkosinathi Mchunu using NSFAS funds for his own benefit instead of allocating it to students.
Mchunu has denied the allegation.
The SRC's Charles Diradingoe says they have not received allowances or text books since the beginning of the academic year.
"Campuses are closed - including Melbourne campus, Umbilo campus, Cato Manor campus, and Asherville campus. The principal has not paid the students' allowance. WHen we speak about that. The principal is telling us - the institution does not have money," he says.
Mchunu says he's visiting the affected campuses today discuss a way forward.
"We suspended academic activities because things got worse and things were ugly. I would appreciate if either the university can investigate. I am not a person who can do such things. I have never been invovled in any corruption and I'm not a corrupt person," he says.
The Higher Education department says it will investigate.
