Tensions between political parties could heat up: violence monitor

A local violence monitor feels tensions between the ANC and IFP could heat up now that the NFP is out of the picture in the run up to next month's local government elections.

The Electoral Court has dismissed the NFP's appeal to set aside its disqualification from the 3rd of August polls.

The build up to the elections has been marred by the death of NFP, ANC and IFP members.

The ANC says 11 of its members have been killed in the last 2 months alone.

Violence monitor Mary de Haas is concerned about the potential for more violence in the coming weeks.

"The IFP will sense that it has a much better chance of regaining some of that territory without the NFP being around. So the inter-party tensions will be there, whether or not they will erupt into violence once elections come things are relatively okay.

"What worries me a lot is the run up to elections, " she said.
