Teen boy drowns at Umvoti River on New Year's Day

A New Year's Day outing for a group of friends in KZN turned tragic when a teenage boy drowned at Umvoti River, north of Durban, on Monday.

The circumstances surrounding the tragedy are not yet clear.
Medi Response paramedics say search and rescue teams including KwaDukuza lifeguards and fire personnel began looking for the child after they were alerted yesterday.
Spokesperson Paul Herbst says his body was found a little later.
"Units responded to the area and, alongside SAPS search and rescue, Medi Response deployed K9 Odi and a drone and to assist in search efforts.
"The body of a 14 year old male has been located by rescuers and recovered and handed over to the local SAPS."
