The Department of Education in KZN has been urged to work with speed to resolve the non-payment of teachers at a Pietermaritzburg school.

It's understood the educators at Sweetwaters Primary School have had their salaries docked for at least three months.

They downed tools in May, complaining about the poor conditions at the school, including pit latrines and dilapidated classrooms.

Some refused to step foot on the school premises until it was safe for learners and teachers.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union's KZN spokesperson Nomarashiya Caluza says the department implemented the no work, no pay principle.

She says the striking teachers were also charged with misconduct.

Caluza says they are in discussions with the department to try and find a resolution to the dispute.

"We are in the process of ensuring that their salaries are unfrozen. We must say that, as SADTU, we really do not support the issue of teachers moving or leaving their schools to stay at circuit offices.

"The department and the union must try by all means to resolve issues timorously at the level of the school and not allow situations where teachers have to leave the school because it leads to things like these where teachers have their salaries docked."

KZN Education has yet to respond to Newswatch's request for comment.
