Teacher union calls for safer scholar transport
Updated | By Sandile Bhengu
The National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) says the latest crash involving pupils calls for an intensified campaign by the KZN Education Department around scholar transportation.
Around 20 children were injured in a serious taxi crash on the M19 on Friday.
First responders say the vehicle veered off the road between Reservoir Hills and the Westville off-ramp.
The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll on the Pinetown side.
NAPTOSA's Thirona Moodley says the safety of children should come first.
"There should be transport provided by the school together with the School Governing Body. So this will ensure that they know who the driver are, they know who the children are and they know the routes that they are going on.
"There has to be some regulation in terms of the way the transportation of the children is happening because if there is a regulation, we have more control and more accountability."
