The protest began early on Tuesday morning.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate's Zinhle Mali says the protesters downed keys this morning and are blocking several main routes, leading to major traffic jams in the city.

"Entrances like Manning Avenue, Frost Hill and Ortman Road are closed to traffic due to that go-slow kind of protest being conducted by taxis. We don't have full details."

Mali says the gridlock also affected the highway.

"Vehicles trying to enter the CBD are all stuck on the freeway and they are causing a gridlock now, due to the fact that nothing is moving towards the CBD."
