Police in KZN and Gauteng have arrested at least 62 people in connection with the looting of shops and barricading of roads, following violent protest action, this past weekend.

The police's intelligence structure NatJOINTS says it will respond to opportunistic criminality as officers continue to monitor major routes and protest hotspots in both provinces.

Demonstrations triggered by the jailing of former president, Jacob Zuma, broke out in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, before spreading to Gauteng.

The ANC's KZN Chair,  Sihle Zikalala has speaking out against the violence, saying criminal behaviour and lawlessness cannot be condoned.

He delivered this message at the centenary anniversary of the SACP.
