Taxi industry gets R1.1 bn relief package
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says government simply doesn't have anymore money to allocate to the taxi industry's relief package of R1.1 billion.

He made the remarks on Friday during a virtual media briefing on support for various entities.
Mbalula says each taxi that meets certain requirements will receive a once-off payment of R5 000.
The minister says he is aware that many in the industry are not happy with what's been put on the table.

"Of course, it won't be accepted. The industry told me in my face that they don't agree with that and I told them that we will not move. I have gone back to government to look at the possibility to increase. Government will not move on that.
"The taxi industry wants R20 000 per taxi per month over a period of time. That is not possible from the point of view of the fiscus," he says.
