There have been incidents where customers have been blocked from boarding the e-hailing services they had requested.

Some taxi operators have been threatening e-hailing drivers who operate in the same areas as they do, with confrontations turning violent on several occasions.

Commuter Xolani Shezi says the feud is proving challenging for the many people who work shifts.

"Taxis do not travel in all areas. For example, in Kingsmead in Durban, there are no available taxis so it forces commuters to walk from Kingsmead to the market area, which becomes a problem, especially at night. Even during the day, we experience a similar problem."

Taxi council Santaco says their only request is for e-hailing services to work within the parameters of the law.

Its KZN spokesperson, Sifiso Shangase, says they are still locked in discussions with the government to fast-track legislation that would regulate the likes of Bolt and Uber.
