TAC warns drop in condom distribution ‘concerning’

The Treatment Action
Campaign says the dramatic decline in condom distribution in the country is
cause for alarm.

According to recent data, the distribution of male condoms by the government decreased over the past five years.
The Health System Trust’s District Health Barometer reported a 45% drop in 2022 compared to 2018.
The TAC's national chairperson Sibongile Tshabalala has appealed to the Department of Health to make the contraceptive more accessible.

She says the drastic decline in distribution puts young people at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
"This is an issue of human nature that has to happen. If there are no preventative methods, knowing that we are a high burdened country, in terms of HIV then we need to sustain the resources we have to manage diseases within the country."
