According to police, the 45-year-old came under fire from two gunmen at around 6pm on Tuesday while leaving his practice on Randles Road in Sydenham.

The assailants fled in a getaway car and the doctor was rushed to hospital.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and have yet to make arrests.

Several days ago, a Peace for Sydenham concert was held in the area to call for peace and unity.

Organiser Ash-Leigh La Foy says the goal is to bring hope and a vision for positive social transformation.

"Amidst all the violence that has taken place in Sydenham over the last year, especially now as heartbreaking as it is to hear about the latest shooting of the doctor, our intention is to remind people that what is temporarily happening is not in the bigger picture of who we are.

"It is not part of our norms. It is not part of our heritage nor our culture."

At the same time, a 24-year-old suspect accused of attempted murder is due in court in Chatsworth on Wednesday.

It's alleged they stabbed a 57-year-old victim in Bayview on Monday morning.
