Sweetwaters residents left without electricity for over a week

Protest action in Sweetwaters outside Pietermaritzburg has turned violent.
Residents have been out on the streets since Monday over power outages.
Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says officers are on scene.
"We are monitoring the situation in Sweetwaters just outside Pietermaritzburg where the members of the community embarked on an illegal protest in their area. It is alleged that they are complaining of service delivery issues. They have blocked roads with burning tyres and stones. The police are monitoring the situation. There have been no arrests or damages so far," he said.
Electricity has been cut-off in some areas for two weeks, as some electricians from Msunduzi are on strike.
Municipal officials believe the striking workers have been sabotaging power supply.
Mbali township, Slangspruit and Hilton are also among the areas where supply has been disrupted.
Msunduzi Mayor, Themba Njilo says independent contractors have been deployed to fix the faults.
"We are not sitting on our haunches. We are working 24 hours to put the situation back to normal. Right now the two contractors are in Sweetwaters, the only area left out. Power will be restored soon to Sweetwaters and Hilton, hopefully by the end of today," he said.
