The men were killed after a high-speed chase in Wentworth, south of Durban on Thursday.
The province's police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, said they had been tracing a vehicle suspected to have been used to commit crimes in the area.

Netshiunda said when officers spotted the vehicle on Tara Road, they signalled for the driver to stop:
"The occupants of the vehicle decided to defy police's orders and sped off, sparking a high-speed chase which saw a pedestrian sustaining injuries after he was knocked down by the suspect's vehicle.
"During the chase, the suspects fired shots at the police, and the police returned fire.
"During the shootout, a police vehicle crashed into a railway track and got stuck. That did not stop the dedicated police officers, who pursued the suspects on foot until the suspect's vehicle came to a standstill after it also crashed.
"Two unknown suspects were found lying dead outside the vehicle," said Netshiunda.
