Suspected Glebelands armed robber to appear in court
A suspected armed robber is due to appear in court today following a gun battle with police at the troubled Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi.
Spokesperson Jay Naicker says police had been carrying out an operation in and around the hostel on Saturday.
"Whilst police were busy with the operation, an armed robbery in progress was reported. When members confronted the suspects, they opened fire on the police. One suspect was shot and wounded.
"He was arrested and taken to hospital where he remains under police guard. A 9mm pistol was also recovered," he said.
Officers had been targeting illegal firearms, wanted suspects, drugs, illegal liquor outlets and stolen property during the two day operation.
Naicker says a man wanted on charges of attempted murder was also nabbed.
About 20 suspects in total were arrested. Five vehicles thought to have been stolen were recovered.
